Passive-Agressiveness as an Art Form...

Although I personally hate it when passive-aggressiveness is directed towards me, I will admit that I do have an appreciation for it in the abstract.

Which is why I was tickled pink to discover this site: PassiveAggressiveNotes.com

Hee!

Passive-aggressive elevated to an art form! And none of it directed towards me, so I can just enjoy it for the petty snark that it is...

I'm particularly fond of the one from the director of a preschool. Sounds like she could have taught the director of my former school a thing or two....

Enjoy!
(or not. I mean, it's your choice. Whatever...)

Just so you know...

I'm writing blog posts in my head *all* the damn time.

Seriously, it's become like this weird compulsion, or something.

I'm driving Shecky to camp - he's learning video game design this summer(!?!); or I'm folding the never-ending mountain of laundry; or I'm staring into the refrigerator, trying to figure out what I can make with for dinner using some possibly-too-old chicken, some spicy mustard and half a tomato. But all the while, I realize that in the back of my mind, I'm composing a blog post about whatever it is.

It's kind of like having a radio playing at barely discernible volume - you know? You're almost not aware of it, it's not really registering on the radar; but if you're paying attention - well, then - there it is???

It's a mildly entertaining academic exercise of sorts.

Now - it seems that getting these phantom blog posts out of my head and actually ON the blog? Well...that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish right there.

Maybe this lame attempt is a start????

Best NPR Interview EVER!

Forgive my lack of a "real" post - there's not a whole lot going on at The House That Crazy Built today.

Well, technically, there's lots going on, but all of it is boring - laundry, vacuuming, pathetically attempting to repair a bad gutter by ourselves. Therefore, I'm not going to ramble on about any of it. Mainly because it's not just boring-boring, it is mega-über-boring...

But you want to know what's *NOT* boring?

THIS <---- the best NPR interview. Ever.

Nom! Nom! Nom!

Punxsutawney Who???

I make it a point to pay no attention to the prognostications of Yankee Groundhogs.

I mean, really - who are you going to put your faith in: the groundhog who started off his morning with an order of "scattered, smothered and covered" from the Waffle House, or the one who didn't?

It's a pretty easy choice to make, in my opinion.

Georgia's own Beauregard Lee declared that we'll have an early spring this year!

WooHoo!

Proud.

It's totally silly, but I am utterly, completely and way-out-of-proportion proud of this:

January.

I set a goal that I would walk 1 mile* every day in January.

I was inspired by something I once read that was attributed to Jerry Seinfeld (although for all I know, it's not original with him.)

Basically, it all about creating an unbroken string of Xs.
Pick a goal, and then just do it.
Every day.
Without fail.

It's all about creating a chain - and then not breaking it.
You can read more about it here...

So anyhow...
I did it.
Some days I did it willingly. Some days, not so much.
And some days? I hated ever single step of the 2,000 steps that I had to take to get it done.

But now?
Now that I see a whole month of Xs?
I'm feeling pretty happy about it.
It was all about getting up, and out, and moving. Getting me closer to that goal of "losing weight and keeping it off..."

On that front, for the month of January I've lost 5 pounds.
In the old days, that news might have really upset me.

That's because in the old days, I could drop that in a week, pretty easily.
Not so much anymore. Pushing 40 is rough!
These days, I'm actually OK with the slowness of it. (which is like meeting both of my goals for the year!)

In the past, it's been about taking weight off as quickly as I can - and really depriving myself in the process.
And no surprise, the weight has always come back.

This time around, I'll be honest... I'm still pretty much eating whatever I want.

The key is that I'm not eating whatever I want every time I want it. And I'm not eating as much of it as I want.
Moderation - what a concept...

This time around, I'm pacing myself to be the tortoise, not the hare.
(Besides, if I drop 20 pounds quickly, then that's just that much longer that I have to maintain it. Which I think is the hard part...)

Hey - if I only lose 1.6 pounds a month, then I'll meet my goal of 20 pounds off *and* maintained at the year's end.
Hee!
Maybe I need to go even more slowly...

*And just so you know, I do realize what a ridonkulously tiny goal this was. But one of the things that I do like about me (not a phrase you see bandied about often here at BFC) is that if I set myself a stupidly tiny goal, not only will I meet it, but I often feel stupid at how attainable it was, and I force myself to keep going. Most days I walked 2 miles or more. But on those days when it was 19°, or when it was raining? I was so glad that all I had to do was a mile...

It's the Little Things, Isn't It?

As I was folding/putting away laundry, this little scene caught my eye, and made me all happy for a just a moment.

Sometimes it's just the silliest things that catch you off guard, and make you smile..

Don't Forget to Wash Your Face!

I mentioned that I've been making washcloths again, right?
Lots and lots of washcloths.
I can't help it - they're fun (and dead simple) to make, and I love the final product.

I decided that for the New Year, I wanted a completely fresh set.
Starting the year off on the right foot, I suppose.
How decadent to have a fresh cloth for each day of the week. (If I were a more clever pup, I'd embroider "Sunday, Monday, etc..." on each one!)

Only wrinkle in my plan? I ran out of ecru colored yarn.

Eh. No worries, just use what you have on hand, right?

Which explains the random blue/purple/teal ones thrown into the mix.
(It's funny, they obviously work exactly the same as the natural colored ones, but I don't like them quite as well. Except for maybe the teal one - because it's all matchy-matchy with the wall color in the bathroom. Which also makes me inexplicably smiley.)

So, yeah. I guess today is one of those days where I'm just in an easy mood.

It's not such a bad place to be...
In a shiny happy mood, and with a clean face, too.

Diversions...

I spent the entirety of yesterday in front of the computer, working on Christmas shopping.

I love the idea of online shopping - but I always seem to idealize it in my mind. I forget that online stores run out of stock, or are designed poorly, or freeze up, etc. In my mind, online shopping should be easy-peasy-mac-and-cheesy every single time.

Suffice to say that when this is not the case, I get really frustrated.
Really, really frustrated.

Yesterday was one of those days.

Seemed like teh internets was just out to get me.

Everything was slow, I had a damn near impossible time finding THE ONE THING that Schecky asked for*, lots of things were out of stock, one website kept crashing my computer, blah blah blah, on and on...
You know the scene too well, 'cause sadly we've all been there.

I had to keep reminding myself that as frustrating as all that was: it didn't suck as much as actually having to GO to actual physical stores (only to deal with slowness, out of stockness, and - sweet cracker sandwich - parking lots! The horror!)

And when reminding myself of that fact wasn't working to take the edge off my frustration, I allowed myself a little fun...

These are the sites that kept me from becoming a total Grinch yesterday...

Enjoy!

Make-a-Flake
- I love the look of paper snowflakes, but have never been that great at creating them... This site, then, is the answer to my problems! Virtual snowflake cutting - with the ability to preview often, and undo any unfortunate cuts. Love this site!

We Hate Sheep. We Love Holiday Sweaters. - heh!
3togetready introduced this to me, and it's HI-larious. You get to design your own tacky holiday sweater, or you can view the gallery of other unfortunate sweaters that other people have designed. (I swear, I think I've seen some of these sweaters modeled by some of Bubba's relatives!)

And, finally, Threadless has just released the last 18 designs for their $10 tee-shirt sale. I like the one that says "The Internet was closed so I thought I'd come outside today"

*Lego Set 6210 - Jabba the Hutt's Sail Barge. Virtually impossible to find. In addition to scouring the web, this also required calling every single Toys R Us in the metro Atlanta area. I learned that customer service at Toys R Us in Atlanta is truly, wholly sucky.

EDITED TO ADD: I've managed to get my grubby little paws on a Jabba's Sail Barge - or it least it will be in my grubby little paws when it arrives in the mail. I managed to find a seller on eBay who seems really nice (I hope!) and only had to pay $20 more than I would have paid had I been able to get it from the Lego website.

In one way, this absolutely appalls me - y'all know I hate spending money. But when I consider that pretty much every other seller on eBay has DOUBLED (or more) the selling price AND I don't want to spend another whole day trying to track one down? Well, in that light, it seems like more and more of a bargain!

Thanks to all you sweet peas who did some searching for this item for me - that is just the nicest thing (and a perfect example of why I think bloggers are just nicer than you average bear!)

Musings on Hannah Montana...

OK - I watched it...

...and right off the bat I've got to say that I don't think I get why this is show has become so insanely popular.
There wasn't much in the way of story (although that may not be a fair assessment since I only watched the one episode), and the acting? Ouch! Painful!

(And what's up with that obviously 8 year old kid who owns his own business? And is filming a television commercial for it? Random.)

Despite my lack of "getting it" - I still loved every minute of the show.
Dolly Parton?
Vicki Lawrence?
Dolly and Vicki in a total smackdown of a catfight?

Priceless... Delicious, even...

And the cherry on the top of the sundae was that Dolly sang, too?
I'm telling you, I was one happy pup...

I do want to add that even though I wasn't smitten by her character (or her acting skills, or lack thereof) I was completely enamored of Miley/Hannah's voice! She's such a young 'un, and she's got that fabulous raspy voice.

It was like listening to a lil' hillbilly Suzanne Pleshette!

TiVo Alert...

After spending a small chunk of this afternoon trying to upload pictures - to no avail - I'm throwing in the towel.
I'm frustrated, so pictures will just have to wait for another day...

But, in lieu of a nice picture-y post, I leave you with this very important service announcement...

TiVo Alert

Set those DVRs for this Friday night, December 7th at 8 pm, the Disney Channel.
And so help me, I never dreamed I would ever type the words that I'm about to type next....

Because you do not want to miss Hannah Montana.

That's right.
Hannah Montana.

Now, I've never watched the show, but I know who she is. Even as out of it as I am, I've not been able to avoid hearing about the juggernaut that is the spawn of AchyBreaky's loins.

But I don't care about her.
(Insert pause here, so that thousands of the nation's outraged tween girls can intake a sharp breath....)

The reason that you don't want to miss this VerySpecialEpisode of Hannah Montana is the VerySpecial Guest Star.

My idol; the one, the only; the inimitable

Dolly Parton

I do love me some Dolly, I really do.
For some reason, many people who know me think that this couldn't possibly be true. But it is. I genuinely admire this woman.

So much so that I'm going to stay in on Friday night*, and watch Hannah Montana.

That's devotion right there, that's what that is...
(and as extra enticement - as if you needed any! - Vicki Lawrence also guest stars. Sweet!)

*OK, maybe that part's not so much of a sacrifice. Can't remember the last time I actually went out on a Friday night. But still...

Oh - and One Other Thing...

It would be remiss of me not to mention that Robert Goulet - singer and star of stage, screen and the tag line that appears at the top of this page - passed away recently.

"Replace tagline" is an item that I've had on my to-do list ever since I heard the news. Obviously, it's not happened yet - but it's on the list.
Anyone have any good suggestions????

Until I do get around to changing it, everyone should take a moment to enjoy the videoclip from which I blatantly stole the above quotation.
It originally aired during the SuperBowl - and it still makes me howl everytime I watch it...
I always wonder.... how much do you think they had to pay to get him to eat a PostIt note? Whatever the amount, it was worth every penny...

Goodbye, Mr Goulet... wherever you are.
